This tutorial is intended to illustrate in 23 pictures an intermediate level process that is worthy for jewelers, model makers, miniaturists, architects, designers and many other hobbyists and artists. This technique is a regular procedure used by sculptor more than a traditional technique used for jewelry model makers. I have combined the procedure with another technique applied by print makers as one of the way to catch textures for my designs.  Textures are one of the relevant features of my pieces and one of the reasons my clients love the craftsmanship of my jewels. It is my pleasure to share with you this little and useful secret that can make your experience more attractive and your pieces really interesting. If you are motivated for textures as I am, you will have fun, too. I have included the main chords of this technique but you and only you could apply it successfully through experimentation. The first time I heard about the term The Lost Wax it was as hearing about a lost treasure. In fact, it is a treasure but fortunately, it is not lost. From its origins, thousands of years ago, the main core of this fascinating process is about to convert wax into metal. It is not magic, either alchemy, but similar.The Lost Wax Casting Technique involves art skills as well as precision procedures and a very specialized expertise. Its wide application covers from large industries , to dentists, artists, sculptors, model makers, and jewelers among others.

The remains and pieces that have been found by archeologist and scientist talk to us about a technique that has been used from thousands years ago and have passed  from one generation to the other. One of the remarkable discoveries was made in 1930 by Alonso Caso in the Mexican State of Oaxaca. The Gold artifacts found there in Monte Alban are protected and exhibited in its regional Museum. Lost Wax Techniques for Jewelry Designers, Hobbyist and Artists. Tips and Notes.

Setting up the Wax Tree

The sprue is the central wax post that keeps connected all the models; it is inserted at the entrance of the flask base. See illustration.

The bigger pieces are setting closer to the base.

Allow at least ½ “ between flask wall and pieces inside.

Calculating Silver Weight

Wax Weight= W.  Weight of wax sprue+ wax models.

Base Weight=B

Total Weight=TW. Base +Wax Weight.

TW-B = W

At this step we are calculating the Wax Tree Weight.

W x 10 = SW

The conversion factor from wax to Silver is the weight of wax times 10.

The Extra 10 to 12 dwt is added to cover the button weight. The button is the cavity of the dome that remains at the flask base and attached to the main sprue. See illustration

Investment Preparation

The proportion of water related to investment powder is about 3.5 to 4 parts of water by 1 part of investment. It is highly recommend to experiment with these proportions. The investment avidity for water could vary by brands and manufacturers.

Tip: The density of the investment mixture affects the surface of metal models (gold, silver, brass, etc. ) In other words, a lesser density makes smoother surfaces.

The Oven and Flask Temperatures

Tip: At the final oven stage we lowered temperature under the sterling silver melting point, avoiding a conflict of temperatures inside the flasks at the time we pour the metal inside it.
